A journey into ancient Roman tradition

For over 30 years, we’ve been committed to preserving and passing down the most authentic Roman cuisine. Under the careful guidance of our Chef Flavio De Maio — the King of Carbonara — we’ve reimagined the very concept of cooking: a temple of flavor where every detail contributes to a full sensory experience.

Respect for ingredients, a carefully selected supply chain, and deep attention to the history behind each dish have allowed us to reach the hearts and palates of thousands of “friends” who choose us every day — and give us the drive to keep going.

The project takes shape — VELAVEVODETTO opens in Testaccio

In the shadow of Monte dei Cocci, Velavevodetto opens in Testaccio from an idea by Marco Andreini, inside a historic venue that celebrates the legacy of Ancient Rome. A true “restaurant-museum” where history lives not only in the dishes, but in the very air — in the exposed stones, the ancient amphorae, and the careful preservation of original elements.

2007

Alessio Andreini joins the team

First as manager, now also a partner in our beloved venture. Alessio enters the world of Roman dining with passion and drive, becoming the engine and the mind behind the daily and administrative management of the restaurant — always adding that creative touch that sets him apart.

2009

Flavio joins the Velavevodetto adventure

Our very own Flavio De Maio — born and raised in Garbatella and then partner and chef at the restaurant Felice a Testaccio — becomes part of the project. He brings with him a vision of cuisine rooted in generous portions, deep respect for tradition, careful ingredient selection, and authentic flavors. A straightforward, honest, truly Roman way of cooking.
It’s thanks to him that the restaurant takes the name “Flavio al Velavevodetto.”

2012

A new flavorful adventure — a second location in Prati

The passion and skill behind our food and wine offerings in Testaccio quickly win over hearts and palates. A small dream begins to grow, and soon becomes something bigger: a second location opens in Piazza dei Quiriti.
Not a typical franchise, but a true neighborhood osteria.

2021

Our carbonara lands in Milan — with a view of the Duomo!

After our success in Rome, it was time to go beyond the Aurelian Walls and bring the flavors of the Eternal City to new heights. And what better place than Milan — a vibrant stage to share and pass down the traditions of Roman cuisine.

2025

Milan gets an encore — after the Duomo, now Porta Venezia

Authentic flavors, tradition, and passion spark a growing desire to spread the Roman spirit even further in Milan. In the heart of the city, the first Velavevodetto outside the Capital opens — a new place of conviviality, where you instantly feel, as always, at home!
